Named but not cited: the brands Google AI Mode mentions and doesn't link to
Being mentioned by Google AI Mode is not the same as being cited. We tracked 238 Indian brands across AI Mode answers for 9,734 keywords. Amazon is named in about 550 answers and linked to in only 15.7% of them. Other sites are cited all the time and never named.
Vaayam Research | Part 10 of a series
Brand visibility in AI search has two halves: whether the answer says your name, and whether it sends the reader to your site. Teams usually track one or the other. In earlier posts we looked at how the AI Overview and AI Mode cite different pages, whether brands own their own name in AI Mode, and the anatomy of an AI Mode answer. This post compares the two halves directly. We checked every AI Mode answer in our 9,734-keyword India dataset for mentions of 238 tracked Indian brands and for citations to those brands' own sites.
Key findings
- 42.7% of AI Mode answers name at least one of the 238 tracked brands, roughly 4,160 answers out of 9,734.
- Only 53.2% of the roughly 7,540 brand mentions come with a citation to that brand's own site.
- The biggest gap is Amazon, named in about 550 answers but cited in only 15.7% of them. Myntra (12.2%), Mahindra (12.5%), Hyundai (16.3%), Flipkart (20.7%), SAP (20.8%) and Microsoft (21.1%) show the same pattern.
- Some brands are cited almost every time they are named: OLX 90.9%, CarDekho 88.5%, 99acres 88.2%, LawRato 86.2% and Magicbricks 84.6%.
- The reverse also happens. Autocar India, Urban Money and MyMoneyMantra are named in 0% of the answers that cite them. Bajaj Finserv is named in 1.1% of its citing answers and BankBazaar in 10.9%.
- The share of mentions with a citation is lowest in Ecommerce (21.4%) and SaaS (29.1%), and highest in Real estate (84.9%) and Legal (84.4%).
1. Four in ten AI Mode answers name a brand
42.7% of AI Mode answers in our sample name at least one of the 238 brands we tracked, which is roughly 4,160 of the 9,734 answers. Brand names are a regular part of the answer text, not a rare event, so how you appear in that text matters.

2. Only about half of brand mentions come with a citation
Across about 7,540 brand mentions, only 53.2% come with a citation to that brand's own site. For nearly half of the mentions, AI Mode names the brand without sending the reader there. A brand can be talked about in a large share of answers and still get far less traffic than the mention count suggests.

3. The brands that are named often but cited rarely
Amazon shows the biggest gap: it is named in about 550 answers but cited in only 15.7% of them. Myntra (12.2%), Mahindra (12.5%), Hyundai (16.3%), Flipkart (20.7%), SAP (20.8%) and Microsoft (21.1%, out of roughly 270 answers) follow the same pattern. Large marketplaces and global technology and automotive brands are widely known, so AI Mode may feel free to name them without linking, while smaller sites need the citation to be credited.

4. The brands that are cited whenever they are named
At the other end, some brands almost always come with a citation when named: OLX at 90.9%, CarDekho at 88.5%, 99acres at 88.2%, LawRato at 86.2% and Magicbricks at 84.6%. These are specialist marketplaces and portals, where the answer relies on their listings and data, so the mention and the link go together.

5. Cited but almost never named
Citations without names also happen. Autocar India, Urban Money and MyMoneyMantra are named in 0% of the answers that cite them. Bajaj Finserv is named in only 1.1% of its roughly 190 citing answers, BankBazaar in 10.9% of roughly 190 and indiacustomercare.com in 1.7% of roughly 120. These sites earn the link, but readers may never learn the brand behind the information.

6. The citation share of mentions varies by industry
The share of mentions that come with a citation differs sharply by industry. It is lowest in Ecommerce (21.4%) and SaaS (29.1%) and highest in Real estate (84.9%) and Legal (84.4%). In Real estate and Legal, being named usually means being linked. In Ecommerce and SaaS, a brand can be named in an answer and not be given the click.

Key Takeaways from the study
Track two numbers per brand, mention rate and citation rate, across your priority keywords. Where you are named but not cited, look at what the answer would need to link to you: a clear, specific page that holds the facts, prices or steps the answer uses. Where you are cited but not named, build branded cues into the content and page titles so that the source is recognisable.
Do not treat a mention as a win by itself. If you are in Ecommerce or SaaS, expect to be named more often than you are linked, and plan for brand recall rather than clicks. If you are a specialist portal, protect the structured listings and data that earn your citations. If you are cited but not named, consider how the reader would find you again.
Report AI visibility as share of mentions and share of citations, and review the gap between them by industry and by brand. These findings come from a one-day correlation snapshot, so validate them against your own brand before changing budgets.

Method and limits
The dataset covers Google AI Mode answers for 9,734 keywords across 10 industries, captured on one day, 26 September 2026, for India in English on desktop. A brand is named when its name appears in the answer text, and cited when the answer links to the brand's own site. We tracked 238 visible Indian brands, and that list size is a definition, not a sample count, so it has not been rescaled. The capture is a non-personalised snapshot, so individual users may see different answers. Every finding is a correlation and none show causation.
